Like any happening city anywhere in the world, downtown Seattle can pas for the nerve center of the region. The waterfront comes alive with state ferries; cruise ships; container vessels; the world renowned Pike Place Market; and tourist traffic that grows exponentially each year. Not long ago the place hardly looked or acted like the unfettered economic success story it is. Downtown had no zest. Even some suburbs seemed livelier. Just a few blocks north of the Market, Belltown and its skyrise condos anchor a new beginning for what used to be a dead end and deprived part of town. To the west, sparkling Puget Sound bathes under sunlight as the statuesque Olympic Mountains silhouette against the sky.
