The Woodlands is located approximately 30 minutes north of downtown Houston off Interstate 45. Once a tiny outpost in the forest, this community has become one of the most desired addresses in the metro area. The Woodlands, created in the 1970s as one of the nation’s first master-planned communities, now boasts multiple shopping centers, thousands of homes, condos, two hospitals, an outstanding school district, many major companies, and 5,000 acres of green space. As the area’s founders intended, the astounding number of trees immediately strikes you when you arrive. It’s possible to “get lost in the forest” even though you may be actually surrounded by shops and homes. This concern for the environment by the real estate developers has earned The Woodlands the Award of Excellence from The Urban Land Institute, as well as the international “Nations in Bloom” Gold Award. Many businesses call The Woodlands home as well. The “Research Forest” has attracted leaders in the biotech field such as Lexicon Genetics and Sigma Genosys. In addition, The Woodlands is world headquarters of Anadarko Petroleum Corporation. Their glass-covered office building near Lake Woodlands is an area landmark.
Other major companies with offices in The Woodlands include Baker-Hughes, Halliburton, Wells Fargo Bank, Winstead Sechrest & Minick, and Rigaku Corp., to name just a few. The Woodlands is designed around the concept of “villages”—areas within the community divided by geographical area and price level. Custom homes, townhomes and condos are available at all times, due to the continual real estate development going on in the area. There are many different kinds of housing available in the area, from trendy lofts and brownstones to five-and six-bedroom golf course estates. Of course, condominiums are part of the master plan as well. As attractions like Market Street, The Woodlands Waterway, and The Players Championship golf course draw visitors and residents to the area, real estate construction has kept up with demand. The Sterling of the Woodlands, opening in 2009, will be located right on the Woodlands Waterway, just a stone’s throw from The Woodlands Mall and the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.
The Sterling high-rise building will feature 133 one- and two-bedroom luxury condos for sale, geared toward the “active senior” who wants the best of luxury without the upkeep. Town Center will also be home to several other luxury condos overlooking Lake Woodlands in the very near future. Those who are looking for a more traditional feel to their townhomes or condos can search in The Woodlands’ forested villages for real estate that meets their needs.
