Lakeshore East

Lakeshore East Condos

Lakeshore East is an unique, new neighborhood in the heart of Chicago. It not yet completely constructed, but it is already attracting condo residents and is sure to draw more. It was created from scratch on a 28-acre parcel that had been old railyards and a pitch and putt golfcourse. Now, condo towers are going up in this neighborhood that is close to the Loop, but which offers upscale condos as well as a park and open spaces where children can play or dogs can romp. Lakeshore East has been called Chicago’s new East Side.

It is one of the largest downtown residential developments in the nation. By the time the development complete is complete in approximately 9 years, it is estimated that 15,000 people will call Lakeshore East home. Though is not the largest residential development in downtown Chicago in terms of the area it covers, it has the most units. Plans call for 4,950 units, 1,500 hotel rooms and some office space. The neighborhood’s boundaries are the Chicago River on the north, Lake Shore Drive on the east, and a network of elevated streets to the west and south. A total of 16 high-rises and 90 townhouses are slated to be built over the next decade. The buildings will be designed to have their own unique looks. A new 325-unit condo building was completed in August.

A building that promises to be a jewel of the development, the 80-story Aqua Building, is under construction. It will feature undulating balconies that have the look of waves and pay homage to the city’s best natural amenity, Lake Michigan, which is nearby. The target completion date for the tower that will have condos, apartments, and a hotel is 2009.

The neighborhood will have all the other amenties needed for ease of daily life. Plans are in the works for for grocery and hardware stores, shops, restaurants and a bank. In an effort to attract families with children, there also will be an elementary school in the neighborhood. That park where children can play or dogs may run is at the center of this new neighborhood. It features playground flooring from recycled plastics, a fountain, free wireless Internet connections, and a dog run. Lakeshore East is designed to be a neighborhood where people of all ages are welcome to live. The planned school reflects a desire to attract families with children into the mix. Construction of the school, which will serve kindergarten through 8th, is scheduled to be finished in two years.

Beside the park and other amenities, condo dwellers will find all sorts of upscale amenities in Lakeshore East, such as state-of-the-art fitness centers, swimming pools and more. It’s also within walking distance of other Chicago neighborhoods such as the bars and shops in Streeterville or to the ice rink, public art and outdoor spaces that grace Millennium Park. Though it is new, Lakeshore East is already becoming a place where condo dwellers in Chicago want to be.
