Gold Coast Condos
The Gold Coast is a tony neighborhood on Chicago’s north side where high rise condo buildings mix with vintage structures and where elegant stores keep company with upscale restaurants and luxury hotels. It is also a neighborhood where condo living has long flourished and where more opportunities for high-end condos are on the horizon. The neighborhood’s wealth of low-rise vintage structures and its significant role in Chicago history were recognized in 1978 when the Gold Coast was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The famed, limestone Water Tower, is one of the area’s landmarks on Michigan Avenue. Having survived the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, the tower is a symbol of Chicago’s strength and durability.
It is now home to the well-regarded Looking Glass Theatre co-founded by actor David Schwimmer. Another tower, Water Tower Place, is just across the street. It is a premium shopping center with more than 100 stores and restaurants plus a mix of distinctive specialty shops and boutiques. In addition to the landmark Water Towers, the Gold Coast is where another distinctive building stands. The John Hancock Center is a 100-story skyscraper known worldwide for its groundbreaking architecture, prestigious location and presence on Chicago’s skyline. Designed by renowned architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the John Hancock Center has 49 floors of condos and has won numerous awards for its innovative and iconic style, including the Distinguished Architects 25-Year Award from the American Institute of Architects.
The building’s distinctive exterior cross-bracing eliminates the need for support beams, greatly increasing the amount of usable floor space. It is no surprise that condos are thriving in the Gold Coast. Well-heeled Chicagoans started making homes in this neighborhood in the late 1880s. They followed the lead of Potter Palmer, a former dry goods merchant and owner of the Palmer House Hotel, who built a castle on Lake Shore Drive in 1885. The neighborhood is bounded by Oak Street on the south, North Avenue on the North, LaSalle Street on the west, and Lake Michigan on the east. Elegant brownstone and gray stones are on in lying streets in this neighborhood. Often, they contain condos with the old-fashioned charms of wood trim, hardwood floors and other original details. Condos in these many of these structures are appreciated for their old-fashioned grandeur.
Many also have also been updated to include the newest amenities that condo dwellers seek such as updated kitchens with granite counters and stainless steel appliances and luxurious, well-appointed bathrooms. Since the neighborhood is established, there often is one place to go for new condo structures. And that’s up. People who want to live in a condo that soars into the sky will find dramatic view in the Gold Coast. . The views from high-rises may focus on the waters of Lake Michigan if your condo faces the north, south or east. Or, a more citified view, the cityscape to the west provides glimpses of the urban landscape. There are several new condo structures are under construction in the Gold Coast.
The Scottish Rite Cathedral, a landmark that survived the Great Chicago Fire, is slated to become the cornerstone of 500-unit residential condominium building. Another intriguing project is the 60-story Elysian Hotel and Private Residences at 11 E. Walton St. It will consist of 188 condo hotel suites and 51 condos. Units will be priced from $480,000 to $6.8 million. Two boutique luxury projects also are under construction. A 34-unit building where condos will be priced from$2.3 to $3.1 million will be at 50 E. Chestnut St. Another project at 50 Oak St. will have condos from $600,000 to $3.5 million. While the Gold Coast is a wonderful neighborhood in which live, it’s also is convenient place for get-aways whether it’s for work or travel.
Condo dwellers can easily get to other neighborhoods on the city’s public transit lines. Chicago’s Loop, for instance, is just a short ride away by bus or elevated train. Even O’Hare International Airport can be reached via public transportation.
