[SAN DIEGO, CA]

By David Mandich

Fall in San Diego is the beginning of the holiday season - time to put away your summer flip flops, tee-shirt and shorts and get out your fall flip flops, tee-shirt and shorts.

What with perfect year-round weather - one doesn't really need much of a wardrobe in San Diego. Humphreys Concerts By The Bay, the outside venue located on Shelter Island kicks off the season with some great shows for us children of the 60's including Hall & Oates, The Doobie Brothers, The Temptations, America, Franki Valli & The Four Seasons, Kenny G., and Tom Jones to name a few.

The House of Blues downtown, has a more contemporary line-up including the Kottonmouth Kings, Todd Rundgren, Zoe, They May Be Giants, Gallagher, Weird Al Yankovich and many others. With hundreds of clubs and theaters downtown and in surrounding communities - one never need stay home in the evenings here - summer, fall, winter or spring - it's all high season in San Diego.

The San Diego Chargers kicks off the season playing the Chicago Bears and the Kansas City Chiefs in September at San Diego's Qualcomm Stadium. From September 14 to the 23rd the San Diego Padres baseball team will be playing ten consecutive games at downtown San Diego's Petco Park against the San Francisco Giants, the Pittsburg Pirates and the Colorado Rockies.

Southern California - the land that brought the world the drive-in movie, surfing, MacDonalds, and many other fads and trends - is now home to another timely innovation - Lean and Green - the world's first organic fast food restaurant that opened August 13 in San Diego's community of La Jolla. "Most Americans eat poorly due to convenience and time" according to owner Miguel Patterson a successful real estate investor and licensed Feng-Shui practitioner.

At Lean and Green, one can enjoy 100% organic wraps, bowls, gourmet salads, shakes, juices and antioxidant shots. Over 12 different salad dressings are offered - all sugar, wheat and glutan free.

Going beyond just offering a variety of organic entrees and beverages, the restaurants take-out boxes are out of unbleached bull rush plants, business cards are printed with soy based ink and embedded with flower seeds so when planted they sprout wildflowers. The cutlery instead of being of plastic can be eaten (when roasted the spoons taste like potatoes). And, pay attention to your cash register receipts - not just for the total, but also for the healthy living tips printed on them.

Yes fast food can be guiltless, and organic can be good, as well as good for you. Lean and Green is located at 7825 Fay Ave. in La Jolla's Bird Rock neighborhood. Tel. 858-459-LEAN
